How to read these categories
A rescue’s focus is the quickest way to narrow a search, but the categories overlap and plenty of organizations sit in several at once. A group listed under both Dogs and Pit Bulls isn’t two things — it’s one rescue that takes dogs generally and has particular experience with one of them.
Broadly the focus areas fall into two groups:
- Species — Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, Parrots, Horses, Farm Animals. What an organization takes in.
- Breed — the individual breeds a rescue specializes in. These tend to be volunteer networks with deep knowledge of one breed’s temperament and health problems, often covering a much wider area than a general rescue would.
One thing you won’t find here is a “no-kill” category. It’s a self-described status with nothing certifying it, so we don’t apply it to other people’s organizations — we’ve written about what the term actually means instead.
