What Alma has, and what it doesn't

Alma is one street wide and several miles long, wedged between the Mississippi and the bluff behind it. That geography is the whole character of the place, and it’s what makes the walking here worth the drive.

Buena Vista Park is the reason most people come. The city puts it 500 feet above the town, looking up and down the river, with a picnic shelter, tables, sitting areas and vault toilets. You drive up rather than hike up, which makes it workable with an older dog that wouldn’t manage a bluff climb.

Rieck’s Lake Park and Campground is north of town on Highway 35 — playground, picnic area, two shelters, full restrooms with quarter-operated showers, and 20 campsites with 20 and 30 amp electric. Camping runs 15 April to 15 October at $20 a night, first come first served. If you’re travelling with a dog and want a base rather than a day trip, this is the option.

Alma Beach and Recreational Area has the bathhouse, tennis and basketball courts, volleyball, a playground and a ball field, plus the City of Alma Boat Launch and the Alma Marina.

Before you plan around a dog

There’s no dog park in Alma, and several of these are beach and picnic areas, which are commonly restricted. Check the city’s parks page or ring the city — five minutes that saves the trip.

What Alma does offer is a genuinely good leashed walk with a view most towns this size can’t match, and a campground that puts you on the river.
