Animal Rescues in Wadena
Wadena is in central Minnesota, roughly three hours northwest of the Twin Cities. Most of what there is to do outdoors here runs through one park.
Sunnybrook Park, and what we could confirm
Sunnybrook Park is Wadena’s main outdoor space, and the City of Wadena maintains it alongside a campground — the city files it under “Sunnybrook Campground, Parks & Trails”. Whiskey Creek runs through the park.

The dog park question
Listing sites describe a fenced off-leash bark park inside Sunnybrook Park, with water and an open field. It isn’t described that way on a City of Wadena page, so check with the city before you plan around it — three hours is a long way to drive to a field.
If you’re adopting from up here
Distance is the thing to plan around rather than wish away. Before you drive:
- Confirm the animal is still available, not just still on the website.
- Ask whether an application needs approving before you can meet it.
- Ask whether they can hold anything, and for how long. Many can’t.
- Try to see more than one animal in the visit. A six-hour round trip to meet a single dog who turns out to be wrong for you is a poor Saturday.
Volunteer transport chains exist and get used to move animals long distances, but they’re arranged around what volunteers are already driving rather than on demand. Ask, be flexible about timing, and offer to meet partway.

The most valuable thing you can offer a rural rescue isn’t money — it’s a spare room. Foster capacity is the hard limit on how many animals an organization out here can take in at all, and one household opening up changes what they can say yes to.
