Dog parks, lakes and trails around Saint James

Saint James has a genuine off-leash park, which isn’t a given in a town this size. Unleashed Dog Park — the city describes it as over two acres of wooded and grassy play area with pet waste stations. Two things it doesn’t have, and the city says so plainly: no water, and no restrooms. Pack accordingly.

For a longer outing, Watonwan County runs several parks within a short drive.

If you’re planning around a dog — especially anywhere near the Long Lake beach — check Watonwan County’s parks page or call the county first.

In town

The city also lists Tiell Park Campground, an archery range, a splash pad, and watercraft rentals on St. James Lake — kayaks, paddle boards and canoes. None of that is dog-specific, but a lake with rental boats and a town with a two-acre off-leash park makes for a better weekend with a dog than the map suggests.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring water to the dog park?
Yes. The city's own page for Unleashed Dog Park says water isn't provided and there are no restrooms on site — its words are to plan accordingly. In a southern Minnesota July that's not a small detail, so take more than you think you need for both of you.
Can dogs go to the county lake parks?
Long Lake Park has a swimming beach, and beaches are commonly restricted. Check Watonwan County's parks page or ring the county before you plan a trip around taking a dog to the water.
